Chapter 13

Pain seared through my body, the werewolf bites agonizingly fresh and burning like hellfire. Everything faded to black as I lost consciousness, the world slipping away from me.

“Did Sebastian stake me?” I wondered in the darkness. If he had, I didn’t notice. But a stake to the heart would have felt like a Thai massage compared to the werewolf bites. I’d told Sebastian to stake me again. He knew that was what I wanted, but would he see it through? Did he realize what was at stake? There’s that damned “at stake” pun again. It always seems to turn up and at the most pointed of times.

The last time Sebastian staked me, my spirit went reeling into a void of nothingness, alone and terrified. This time, however, something was different. Slowly, as my senses returned, I heard laughter, jazz, and the sound of clinking glasses. Then my vision returned.

The room was sleek and contemporary, with glass liquor shelves reflecting the dim lights, creating an intimate atmosphere. A jazz singer crooned softly in the corner, accompanied by her small band. She was talented. I’d never had much of a singing voice. If I could choose a voice, though, it would have been hers. Silky and seductive. People I didn’t recognize laughed and sipped on various cocktails, enjoying themselves at the bar and various tables scattered throughout the space.

“Where the hell am I?” I murmured under my breath, taking in my surroundings. My gaze fell upon the bartender, who busied himself making drinks, his back turned to me. “Hey!” I called, trying to get his attention. He turned, and my heart skipped a beat.

“Caladbolg?”

It was him, though he looked paler and older than before, when he’d appeared to me as a Native American boy. His features were still unmistakable, and a shiver ran down my spine. What was going on?

“Mercy,” he said, a wry smile playing on his lips. “Fancy seeing you here.”

“Don’t tell me you’re surprised,” I replied warily. “You must’ve brought me here. What’s going on? Where am I?”

“First things first, Mercy,” he said smoothly. “What can I get you to drink?”

I stared at him incredulously for a moment before retorting, “Are you serious? You know what I want.” He snapped his fingers with a grin and announced, “One Bloody Mary coming up. Extra bloody!”

With a snap and a flourish, a glass that looked like pure blood appeared on the glass bar under Caladbolg’s hand, and he slid it to me.

“Thanks?” I muttered before taking a cautious sip. The taste was rich and satisfying, and I couldn’t help but let out a small sigh of pleasure. “This can’t be real,” I told myself aloud. “It must be some kind of dream… or a hallucination.”

“Ah, well, that depends on how someone defines ‘real,’” Caladbolg mused. “Who’s to say a dream isn’t real? Perhaps it’s just a different kind of reality.”

“Last time I was staked, I was in the void,” I reminded him, my voice edgy. “Why is this so different?”

“Your spirit was connected to Oblivion’s,” he explained, nodding solemnly.
